our steps

Tough Call Protocol

These steps assist first responders in processing difficult calls and decrease the likelihood of developing compassion fatigue.

01

Purpose

Aligning to your purpose, helps to reframe difficult moments. Identify why you serve as a first responder, a small piece of wisdom you gained from the recent call, and one small win you had at the call.

02

Recharge

Restoring your mind and body are essential to remaining healthy as you serve. It is important to put your lived experience into words as it moves the experience to the left side of the brain and allows it to be stored correctly and disconnects from some of the strong, emotional reactions. Write down or voice record your current thoughts about the incident, describe images that you saw, and the reactions that you are experiencing while in a relaxed state of mind.

03

Connect

In advance of a tough call, identify two or three individuals who are supportive of you. Identify physical, emotional, and support needs you have and how you might meet them. Share this with your support person(s) and how might they assist you in meeting these needs if it would be helpful.

Licensed Mental Health Counselor, Owner

Hello! I am a licensed mental health counselor in the state of Iowa with over twenty years of experience in mental health counseling, consulting, and education. I am currently accepting new clients. I work with adults and couples.

I provide counseling and consulting services to both adults and couples.

I am trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) which is an evidence-based eye movement therapy used to treat trauma symptoms, anxiety, occupational stress. performance difficulties, and a variety of other issues. ART is an evidence-based practice, directive and specific. ART uses the client’s ability to imagine their troubling “scenes” and monitor their bodily sensation. Clients can choose how much they want to verbally share with me about their scenes. Clients do not need to verbally recount their scenes that cause distress for ART to be effective.
